The World Language Department at Northfield High School strives to create a global perspective among students. This is achieved through rigorous coursework surrounding languages and their respective cultures. By focusing on how language reflects the inherent identity of differing peoples throughout the world, we convey to students the importance of actualizing themselves not only in their home culture, but also comparing their identities to other cultures around the world. Review the academic expectations for each language at Northfield.

All incoming Northfield Freshmen, who are non-native speakers, are placed into a World Language 1 course. Any student who wishes to be placed into a higher level class is required to take and pass a Northfield course placement assessment, as well as meet the criteria for such placement. Placement is consistent with the length of time and success of a student’s middle school world language experience.

Many of Northfield students finish high school with national recognition for their pursuit of college-level biliteracy in multiple languages. Learn more the Seal of Biliteracy recognition at graduation.
