The past several weeks have brought our Northfield community tremendous pride as our Cheer and Poms teams prepared to compete at the national level, representing Northfield High School on a national stage.
These student-athletes have demonstrated exceptional dedication, discipline, and teamwork through countless hours of practice and preparation. Their commitment reflects not only their talent, but also their leadership, resilience, and deep pride in representing Nighthawk Nation.
Unfortunately, due to severe weather in Dallas, the national championship event for our Cheer team was canceled this weekend. While disappointing, this does not diminish the excellence, effort, and hard work demonstrated by our Cheer athletes throughout the season. While the team was unable to compete, we are proud to share a recording of their performance, which reflects the talent, preparation, and heart they brought to this season. We are incredibly proud of them and grateful for the leadership of Director Lauryn William and Assistant Coaches Nasharra Burton and Fetale Ali.
Our Poms program, led by Director Amanda Segro and Assistant Coach Justine Gonzalez, will head to Orlando the first week of February to compete nationally. As they take the floor, they carry with them the full support and admiration of our students, staff, families, and alumni.

Northfield High School is proud to share that two of our ninth-grade advisory teachers, Cole Ritter and Kedi Ochs, are currently featured on the Denver Public Schools website! Their story is part of a district-wide series celebrating the diverse voices and impactful work within the DPS community.
The feature, titled “Powerful Foundations,” highlights how Cole and Kedi empower our newest Nighthawks to find their voices, explore their identities, and lead with courage from their very first semester. By focusing on self-advocacy and community-building, they ensure our students are prepared to be “principled and engaged citizens of the world”.

At Northfield, strong relationships are foundational to student success, and our Innovation Plan is designed to protect the conditions that make those relationships possible. Central to this work is our “6 of 8” teaching model, which supports smaller class sizes, broader course access, and individualized student support.
In a traditional high school model, teachers typically teach 5 of 7 periods, often resulting in class sizes of 35 or more students. Through Innovation flexibility, Northfield educators teach 6 of 8 periods, allowing us to staff more classrooms throughout the day and maintain an average class size of approximately 26 students.
This model is essential for student access. An eight-period day allows IB Diploma students to manage a rigorous IB course load while still accessing CTE pathways, electives, and enrichment opportunities. Without this structure, students would lose access to additional courses, significantly limiting elective options and pathways. Northfield currently maintains a robust elective catalog that supports students’ academic interests and postsecondary goals.
The model also aligns with Denver Classroom Teacher Association (DCTA) requirements by ensuring appropriate student loads and protected planning time. By balancing instructional responsibilities with planning periods, educators have the capacity to provide meaningful feedback, mentorship, and personalized support.
We are proud to partner with Denver Public Schools to maintain these high standards, ensuring our graduates are principled, engaged, and world-ready citizens.

Registration is now open for the 9th annual Winter SAT Prep course at Denver University. Taught by 99th-percentile instructors, this 27-hour comprehensive program offers high-level coaching at a fraction of the cost of private tutoring.

DPS has launched the CDAC to develop new policies regarding student cell phone use, as required by Colorado HB25-1135. The public is invited to observe meetings or provide public comment.

If your student loves drawing, graphic novels and comics, Library Services wants creative comics from students (grades one through 12 in non-charter schools) to feature in The Art of Storytelling Cartooning Student Showcase!
Middle and high school students can also submit speech bubbles and artwork for the The Art of Storytelling Interactive Cartoon Panel/Comic Strip. The deadline for submissions is March 20. The showcase, activities and author-led workshops will be featured at the Steam Expo on May 2 at the CSU Spur campus. If you have questions, contact DPS Library Coordinator Jenn Brown.
We’ve had a fantastic start to our Children’s Hospital Toy Drive! As we enter the final week, we are looking to bolster our collection—especially for our infants and teens.
