What Hispanic Heritage Month Means to Me
I am the historian and head of our social committee for La Raza and I believe Hispanic Heritage Month is important because it honors our history, culture, and traditions. Even more importantly, it allows us to recognize the many contributions that have made history and continue to shape the world around us. From influential leaders, artists, scientists, and activists to our local community members, Hispanic and Latino individuals have always made an impact on the world in countless ways.
Hispanic Heritage Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate these achievements, learn from the stories of those who came before us, and appreciate the diversity within our communities. It is a reminder that our history matters, our culture is something to be proud of, and our contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.
As the next generation, we also have a role in carrying these stories, traditions, and accomplishments forward. Hispanic History Month is not only about celebrating where we come from, it’s also about recognizing who we are today and the history we are still creating.

Meetings are open to the public and held in the lobby of Building 2. The meeting time is 5:30 – 7 p.m. with an informational review and preparation scheduled from 5:00–5:30 p.m. on the dates below. CSC may add dates.

We’re thrilled to announce that 2 members of the Class of 2027 have been named National Merit Semifinalists, placing them among the top 1% of Colorado high school seniors based on PSAT/NMSQT scores. This distinction reflects their dedication, intellect, and hard work.
To advance to Finalist status, students must complete the scholarship application, maintain high academic performance, obtain a school endorsement, and confirm qualifying SAT/ACT scores. Our counselors are supporting each Semifinalist through this process.
While the National Merit Scholarship is $2,500, recognition opens doors to additional college and corporate opportunities to include tuition or even a full-ride scholarship. This achievement is a proud moment for our students, families, and the entire Northfield community.

Northfield took a commanding 17-0 lead over Mullen in the third quarter before the Mustangs mounted a furious comeback leading the Nighthawks 20-17.
Trailing by three with just 45 seconds remaining, the Nighthawks drove down the field and Jack Stizman connected on a clutch 47 yard field goal to send the game into overtime.
What followed was an instant classic.
Northfield and Mullen battled through six overtimes, with neither team willing to give in. Each possession tested the players physically and mentally as both programs continued to answer the other.
When the game finally ended, the lasting image came at midfield, where the two teams gathered after an exhausting battle and showed mutual respect for what they had just experienced together.
The night became about more than the final score. It was a test of resilience, composure, and determination; the kind of game that reveals what a team is capable of when there is seemingly nothing left to give.
While the Northfield High School Poms team is known for earning top awards on the national stage, their impact extends far beyond competitive trophies. Each September, the team shifts its focus to building the next generation of dancers through its annual Mini-Poms Clinic.
Open to aspiring dancers from kindergarten through eighth grade, this year’s three-day clinic gave younger students the chance to train alongside the high school squad. After two focused afternoons of learning choreography, technique, and routines, the clinic culminated in an unforgettable halftime performance under the Thursday night lights during the Nighthawks’ football game at All-City Stadium on Sept. 17.
For the high school dancers, the clinic is a powerful lesson in student leadership, mentorship, and responsibility as they guide their younger peers through rehearsals. Beyond serving as a vital team fundraiser—helping offset travel costs for their upcoming national competition in Florida—the program creates a lasting community connection. By welcoming future Nighthawks onto the field early, the Poms team is actively cultivating school spirit and a strong sense of pride that will carry these young athletes all the way into high school.
Please note that we have an alternate schedule on Thursday, Oct. 1 to accommodate the student pep assembly. School start and end times remain the same.

Showing up daily and on time helps students succeed academically, build social-emotional skills, and stay connected to opportunities. It also makes a big difference for our school.
The October Count Window runs Sept. 24–Oct. 3, with Oct. 1 as the official Count Day. If a student is absent on Oct. 1, their attendance on other days in the window is still considered. Because state funding for schools is based on October Count, strong attendance supports your student’s growth and ensures our school has the resources to serve all students well.

Even though school meals are free for all students, all DPS families are asked to complete the annual form. Completing this isn’t just about school meals—it directly impacts your family’s wallet and school funding.
Submitting the form secures essential state funding for Northfield and can waive or reduce costs for your student’s athletic fees, course fees, AP/IB testing, and college applications.
To get started, determine which main application your family needs to file—complete either FAFSA or CASFA, never both—and check if your target colleges require the additional CSS Profile.

Our seniors kicked off their final year together under the morning sky for this year’s Senior Sunrise! From hand-decorated overalls to warm drinks and breakfast treats provided by our amazing parents and student council, it’s a tradition that starts the year off right.

Our staff lounges got a festive transformation this week thanks to the Northfield High School Foundation and their annual Guacamole Day celebration! From decorating the lounges to stocking the tables with fresh chips and dip, the Foundation gave our teachers and staff a well-deserved treat to celebrate the week.
Falling right at the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, this delicious tradition offers a fun connection to Indigenous and Mexican history. The word guacamole traces back to the Aztec Nahuatl language: a blend of ahuacatl (“avocado”) and molli (“sauce” or “mixture”), which merged into āhuacamōlli before evolving into the word we use today.
Beyond festive snacks, the NHS Foundation supports our staff, classrooms, and campus all year long. We are so grateful for their ongoing partnership and dedication to keeping school spirit high across our community!
