Welcome

Headshot of Salma Hanine
Hi Nighthawks! I’m Salma Hanine, Student Body President, and I’m so excited to welcome everyone to a new school year. One of my main goals as president is to strengthen our school spirit. I want everyone to feel welcome, seen, and part of a supportive, energetic community that’s proud to be Nighthawks.

My biggest piece of advice for new students is simple: try new things. It’s the best way to make friends and discover what you really enjoy. To me, Spirit Week is all about having fun together.

For next week, I’m especially excited for “Dress Like You’re Headed to the Airport” day—because I get to wear PJs to school!

Here’s to a year full of spirit, connection, and Nighthawk pride!

Safety Reminders

School IDs
As a shared campus with DSST, it is important for the safety of all students and staff that everyone on the Paul Sandoval Campus wears their school ID at all times. IDs allow us to quickly identify who belongs on campus and help keep our community secure.

If your student is missing their ID, photos will be taken on Monday to provide them with a new one. Math teachers will be dismissing students without an ID to Building 5 (B5) so they can receive a replacement.

NOTE: Students who did not get an ID during in-person enrollment, will have the opportunity to get an ID on Monday, August 25. Students will be release by their Math teacher to get their picture and an ID.

Crosswalk
56th Avenue is a very busy street, and jaywalking puts our students at serious risk. Nobody wants to see a student injured, and no driver wants to be in that position. Please take a moment to remind your student to use crosswalks and practice safe walking habits.

Behavioral and Emotional Health Screening
Safety at Northfield goes beyond the physical environment—it also includes supporting the emotional and mental well-being of our students.

We invite and encourage you to complete the form to provide valuable input on your student’s needs. The form takes less than five minutes to complete and helps us better support every student.

  1. Scan the QR code or follow the link below:
  2. Enter your student’s DPS ID and date of birth (MM/DD/YYYY).
  3. Complete the screening form.

Meet Our New Community Service Coordinator

Liz Ritter headshot.
As the new year gets underway, I want to introduce myself as the new Community Service Coordinator for Northfield High School. My name is Liz Ritter and I’m also the Librarian!

As I’m sure you’re all aware, Northfield requires its students to complete 30 hours of community service prior to graduation. My goal this year is to increase communication regarding volunteer opportunities to both families and students. I also hope to diversify the type of opportunities available to our students!

I am incredibly excited to help your students earn their volunteer hours this year, so please feel free to reach out to me via email.

If your student ever has any questions they can always find me in the Library (located on the west side of Building 3) between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Staff Spotlight

Head shot of Makala Woods

Dean Makala Woods is beginning an 11th year in education, including more than a decade as a high school science teacher. More recently, Makala has collaborated with a team from Harvard to pilot, collect data on, and advocate for a cooking-in-science curriculum. With an interest in becoming an Assistant Principal, Makala moved to Northfield to gain experience in how the administrative side of a school operates by learning from some of the district’s strongest leaders. Outside of work, Makala enjoys hiking, pickleball, trivia nights, and a good comedy show. A little-known fact is that Makala discovered a Triceratops skull in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana and has been actively excavating it for the past several years with the paleontology class at Montana State.

Eric Hill is the Dean of Students at Northfield High School. This is Eric’s first year at Northfield, but he brings 14 years of experience as a Dean to the role. He has a passion for building relationships with students and supporting them in realizing their potential through accountability, consistency, and by helping them build the capacity to see themselves as productive members of society. Outside of work, Eric enjoys hands-on projects and DIY activities, along with camping and traveling when time allows. Most often, he can be found at home with family or cheering on his kids at their many activities.

Final 30

The Final 30 minutes are built into each school day from 3:25–3:55 PM. This time is designated for teachers, staff, and administrators to provide targeted support for students. This may include academic interventions, assignment make-up or retakes, extended time on assignments, parent or student meetings, 1:1 check-ins, phone calls home, restorative conversations, club meetings, and more.

Even if students are not present during Final 30, it is still expected that staff utilize this time productively for planning, communication, or other professional responsibilities and remain on campus through the end of their contract day at 4:00 PM. If you have to leave early it is expected that you inform your administrator.

Student athletes’ practices do not begin until after final 30. It is expected that all teachers and staff are on campus with students until 4:00 unless the teacher has competition coaching duties: this does not include practice.

Monday Late Starts

On Mondays that are not designated as full-day staff professional learning, we will use the late start time for staff collaboration. This time may be used for staff meetings, department collaboration, professional learning, or other tasks such as Extended Essay support, P/SAT training, and more.

Meetings will take place from 8:15–9:15 AM and are outlined on the Operations Calendar. Please note that how we utilize this time may shift based on emerging school needs.
