100 Years in the Making: 2026 Black History Month Kicks-Off at Northfield

Mr. Garrett Hayes

This February marks the 100 year anniversary of the established celebration of Black history which started when Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Black History Week in February 1926. February was chosen as a means to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass. The week would later be celebrated the entire month in 1976. So, in observance of this month, the Black Student Alliance (BSA) at Northfield High School has been making plans to highlight the history of Black Americans and people of the African Diaspora, while connecting said history to the multitude of identities within the Northfield community.

Northfield’s Black Student Alliance works to shed light on the Black experience; provide a safe space for Black students and allies of all colors, ethnicities, and backgrounds; and not only recognize the history of the past, but also make history in the present. While the BSA of Northfield High School will have a number of ways to pay tribute to Black Americans past, present, and future, they will kick the month off with a Black American inspired spirit week:

Mr. Kevin Wyatt

This will all culminate in a school-wide celebration on Friday that will include performances and games in reverence of Black history. There will be more to come in the coming weeks, but students and staff should look throughout the hallways, on classroom doors and bulletin boards for both updates, shoutouts to community members, and Black history facts that may surprise them.

In a day and age when humanity and dignity are becoming luxuries rather than guarantees, where there are attempts to erase history, and where we are seeing our country become increasingly divided, it brings a great sense of comfort knowing that student-led organizations like the Black Student Alliance are working to unite and educate the community.

Highly Qualified Experts

The role of a School Counselor in Colorado requires an immense amount of specialized training and dedication. To serve our students, each member of our team has met rigorous state standards, including:

How They Support the Nighthawk Journey

Our counselors are multifaceted advocates who serve students in three primary ways:

  1. Academic Guidance: They help students navigate our course offerings, and keep them on track to meet graduation requirements.
  2. Mental Health & Wellness: As trained mental health professionals, they provide a safe space for students. They offer crisis intervention, social-emotional support, and work closely with our school social workers and psychologists to ensure a holistic approach to student well-being.
  3. Career & College Planning: Whether it’s exploring career pathways in 9th grade or navigating the $21 million in scholarships awarded to our seniors, our counselors guide the “Individual Career and Academic Plan” (ICAP) to ensure every graduate is a principled and engaged citizen of the world.

Weekly Highlights

Nighthawk Pride: Ari Bekelman Named Boettcher Finalist

We are thrilled to share some momentous news! Senior Ari Bekelman has been named a Finalist for the prestigious Boettcher Scholarship—the most competitive and esteemed merit-based award in the state of Colorado.

While our community celebrated three incredible semi-finalists earlier this year, the field has now been narrowed to the “final 100.” To understand the magnitude of this honor, one must look at the numbers: Ari emerged from a pool of over 2,000 applicants from across the state. By reaching this stage, he is officially recognized in the top 5% of Colorado’s graduating seniors.

The Boettcher Scholarship is designed to keep Colorado’s “best and brightest” in-state by providing a full-ride scholarship to any four-year Colorado institution. Selection is based on more than just high marks; it requires a proven track record of intensive intellectual curiosity, leadership, and a commitment to service—the very qualities we cultivate.

Ari’s journey reflects #TheNorthfieldWay: a commitment to strategic thinking, academic tenacity, and principled leadership. He will head into the final interview round this spring, representing the spirit of Northfield High School.

Please join us in congratulating Ari on this exceptional milestone. We are incredibly proud of his hard work and can’t wait to see what he achieves next!

A: Each number, zero through nine, is listed in alphabetical order.

This Week…

Mrs. Katherine Johnson
NASA Mathematician

In 1962, NASA used its first room-sized IBM computers to calculate John Glenn’s flight path around the Earth. However, Glenn famously refused to fly until Katherine Johnson verified the numbers by hand.

  1. He thought the computers were too slow.
  2. The new computers suffered from “glitches” and power surges.
