Dress Requirements – All Graduates
All graduates are expected to dress in a manner that befits the dignity of the occasion. Dress up! Graduates may not attend the ceremony in shorts, t-shirts, torn jeans or flip flops. No graduating senior is allowed to participate in the ceremony without the appropriate apparel.
1. Wear the authorized navy blue graduation cap, gown and 2026 gold tassel. Nothing can be worn and/or affixed to the outside of the graduation gown. The cap, gown, 2026 gold tassel and school-issued honor stole/cord(s) is the dress code.
2. No additional stoles, cords, or regalia is allowed; only regalia handed out at the Senior Awards ceremony or items covered under SB 23-202 are permitted.
3. Decorated caps are allowed. See the decorating guidelines below.
4. No purses or other items are allowed at a graduate’s seat during the ceremony. If a purse/bag is left in the staging area, Northfield is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
5. Under the graduation gown, please dress appropriately; this includes dresses, skirts, dress pants, neckties and dress shoes.
Cap Decorating
Graduation has a uniform which includes the cap, gown and school-issued regalia, such as honor cords and the IB stole. Decorating a cap is a graduate’s opportunity to represent oneself, academic passions and interests.
The decoration of graduation caps must be school appropriate. All caps are checked prior to graduation during staging in the Hamilton Gym, and any deemed inappropriate are replaced with a plain cap. If a replacement cap is not available, graduating seniors may not be able to participate in the ceremony. Appropriateness guidelines are outlined in our school handbook.
Follow these guidelines when decorating a graduation cap:
Make the decoration meaningful. Include a symbol of academic passion, athletic team or club participation, an inspirational quote or photo. Thank a parent/guardian, grandparent, teacher and/or friend. Recognize a college or university, or branch of the military.
Only the flat top area of the cap may be decorated. There may be nothing hanging down from the side of the cap.
Decorations must be flat on the surface of the cap. 3-D creations are prohibited.
Caps can NOT:
Contain any advertisement, symbols, abbreviations, initials, words, slogans, patches or pictures that: refer to drugs or controlled substances, tobacco, alcohol or weapons, or be of a sexual nature.
Denote an affiliation with gangs, or advocate drug use, violence, illegal activity or disruptive behavior, which is detrimental to the safety and welfare of other students.
Students will be required to clear this ‘station’ at the Senior Checkout on May 21 to receive their cap and gown after rehearsal at Northfield on May 22.
Cash, check or money orders will be accepted during senior checkout.
