My Journey as a New Nighthawk

Hearing from the voices of our students, like Zoe, reminds us why our community matters so deeply—Northfield is a place where students find belonging, support, and pride in their journey.

Starting high school is a big step, and for me, becoming a Nighthawk has been an exciting journey. I chose Northfield because my sister goes here and I live very close. I was most excited about meeting new people and trying out for the volleyball team, but I was also nervous about finding my classes and keeping up with grades.

Teachers and staff have played a big role in helping me feel welcome. “Mr. Ochs has really helped me feel supported—he’s always there to talk and is the funniest person ever.” Knowing I can go to him anytime makes a big difference. My classmates have helped too. In some classes, I don’t have many friends, but when it comes to group work, people always include me to join them and work together.

Northfield has been both challenging and rewarding. In math class, I’ve learned new ways to solve equations and expressions, and Ms. Lloyd makes learning fun in different ways. It’s also helpful having Final 30 available if I need extra support. I felt proud of myself when I worked hard over the summer to prepare for volleyball tryouts—and made the team!

What I love most about being a Nighthawk is the community and how welcoming everyone is. Northfield has also helped me see my future differently because ever since becoming a Nighthawk I have learned more about which classes I should take and the IB diploma that I could potentially start in my junior year.

My advice to incoming 8th graders is to dedicate time after school to study and stay caught up on homework—it really helps you feel prepared and less stressed the next day.
